Celebrate with our community! Ashland, Oregon’s 28th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration features music, spoken word, and dance livestreamed on the global, commons-based HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv Monday 16 January at 12 p.m. PST–1:30 p.m. PST (Los Angeles) / 2 p.m. CST–3:30 p.m. CST (Chicago) / 3 p.m. EST–4:30 p.m. EST (New York).

Follow live-tweetin@AshlandMLKDay, and use #SOMLK and #PowerJusticeLove.

Keynote speaker: Dr. Alma Rosa Alvarez, professor of English at Southern Oregon University.

This year, the celebration’s theme is “Power-Justice-Love For all,” from Dr. King’s 1967 speech “Where Do We Go from Here?” “Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”

This is an all-community event with participants from the Ashland School District, Oregon Shakespeare Festival company members, Southern Oregon University students, families, and individuals. Performances will include Lawson Inada, Walker Elementary, Ashland Danceworks, Phoenix Sigalove, Brent Florendo, Ashland Middle School, and excerpts from “After Orlando.”  Historian D.L. Richardson will emcee the celebration. The event and online simulcast are sign-language interpreted.

Dr. King’s leadership inspired a transformation in society toward greater dignity, compassion, and justice for all people. The observance of the slain civil-rights leader’s birthday invites reflection and offers the community an opportunity to be a part of further transformation, moving closer to Dr. King’s dream for the world.
