The National Black Theatre, Penumbra Theatre, New Dramatists, and 53rd State Press co-hosted readings and a panel discussion to celebrate two new book releases by Daniel Alexander Jones. The party was live-streamed on the commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network on Saturday 2 October 2021.
Featuring readings by Vinie Burrows, Eisa Davis, Omi Osun Joni L. Jones, Jason Phelps, and Rhonda Ross and a panel discussion with Daniel Alexander Jones, Sarah Bellamy, Omi Osun Joni L. Jones, Jonathan McCrory, and Valerie Curtis-Newton about Daniel Alexander Jones’ plays and Black and Queer experimental theatre traditions.
The event is in celebration of two books released in September by 53rd State Press: Love Like Light, Daniel Alexander Jones’s collection of seven plays and performance texts, and Particle and Wave, a conversation between Daniel Alexander Jones and feminist poet and scholar Alexis Pauline Gumbs about how an attention to care, community, nuance, invitation, perceptual particularities, and embodied conditions can resist the profoundly extractive context in which life is lived and art is made.
