Join us for an uplifting evening with Global Deaf Aid Foundation executive director Kavita and California Association of the Deaf president Kavita Pipalia. Kavita will share her #DeafWoke journey.

#DeafWoke is a virtual consciousness-raising, engaging online talk show, led by Black and Native American Deaf host Mr. Antoine Hunter PurpleFireCrow.

Founded as a response to isolation and misinformation experienced during COVID-19, #DeafWoke provides access to the Deaf BIPOC life stories, critical coverage of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, education, arts, social justice, and analysis of COVID-19-related news for Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing, Late-Deafened and Black Hearing communities.

Our mission is to provide opportunities for our stories to be heard by providing the #DeafWoke platform to uplift BIPOC Deaf and disabled artists’ voices and to contribute to the arts and larger society, increasing awareness at the intersections of audism, ableism, and racismthis includes DeafDisabled stories as a force for cultural change and collective liberation. There is also a space to talk about economics, parenthood, and education.

All episodes will be produced with ASL interpreters and captioning welcoming everyone to the conversation. For da Hearing and Deaf! It’s inspiring, it’s funny, it’s beautiful with the ugly, it’s things people don’t really talk about, it’s unheard of, it’s Deaf Woke!

Guest Bio:
Kavita Pipalia, Global Deaf Aid Foundation Executive Director Kavita, a native of India, is an active professional in a variety of Deaf-serving organizations: the current President of California Association of the Deaf; one of three Deaf mothers who are founders of KODAWest a non-profit organization which provides hearing children with Deaf parents programs and camp program opportunities to interact with peers. She works in sales for Sprint Relay, while simultaneously teaching American Sign Language at Pasadena City College in Los Angeles, CA. Outside of her professional life, she participates in advocacy and consulting services for various companies to provide accommodation needs for Deaf people. I am currently a mentor to an Indian hearing woman, who has a deaf daughter, is now in IPP ( interpreting professional program to be an interpreter! I am thrilled to see Indian woman to be an interpreter as I have been searching for BIPOC (Indian, specifically as I am myself a native Indian). Also, I have been working with Arlene, Candace, Smita and Ebony on Name Sign for our Madame Vice President, Kamala Harris as one of the core team. It is published last Friday, July 16th on New York Times!
