651 ARTS presented a pre-show chat for Marc Bamuthi Joseph's Word Becomes Flesh livestreamed on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Sunday 8 January 2012 at 12 p.m. PST (San Francisco) / 3 p.m. EST (New York) / 8 p.m. GMT (London).

Word Becomes Flesh
Presented in Association with 651 ARTS
Conceived and Directed by Marc Bamuthi Joseph / The Living Word Project (Oakland)

Presented as a series of letters to an unborn son, Word Becomes Flesh confronts fatherhood in urban communities and the mythology of the black male body—from cotton field to athletic field and all the spaces in between. Marc Bamuthi Joseph re-invents his 2003 solo piece for a new generation with an ensemble cast using spoken word, music, and contemporary and hip-hop dance.

"Joseph's words can take an audience's breath away, then coax out sighs, exclamations of approval, and finally draw them to their feet." - The San Francisco Bay Guardian

Word Becomes Flesh is a National Performance Network (NPN) Re-Creation Fund Project sponsored by La Peña Cultural Center (Berkeley, CA) in partnership with Painted Bride (Philadelphia, PA), Dance Place (Washington, DC), Youth Speaks (San Francisco, CA), and NPN.
