Documentaries Highlighting Artistic Encounters Across the World

A Safe Havens Freedom Talk

Wednesday 26 April 2023

Safe Havens Freedom Talks (SH|FT) presented three documentary screenings livestreaming on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network on Wednesday 26 April 2023 at 10 a.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4) / 3 p.m. BST (London, UTC +1) / 4 p.m. CEST (Oslo, UTC +2).

Encounters between artists from different corners of the world are captured in a series of mini-documentaries. Safe Havens Freedom Talks (SH|FT) presents Safe edition #2, launched during the Artistic Freedom Conference ("Fri Kunst") on 3 March 2023. This event will be streamed on Wednesday 26 April at 4:00 pm CEST.

This edition includes three films. One of them features Iranian musicians Nikan Koshravi and Arash Ilkhani, who were once guest artists in Safe Music Haven Harstad, and the driving forces behind the heavy metal band Confess, meeting Norwegian heavy metal veteran Anders Odden at the Munch Museum in Oslo, Noway.

In another episode, Afghan/Iranian artist and singer-songwriter Ghawgha Taban, a guest artist in Safe Music Haven Harstad (ICORN/Norwegian PEN), is seen conversing with Norwegian artist and singer-songwriter Oddrun Lilja Jonsdottir in the grand hall of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet.

For the third film, Wang Chong, a Chinese actor, theatre director, filmmaker, and Safemuse artist in residence, sits down for a conversation with Ellen Horn, a former Norwegian Minister of Culture, former Director of the Norwegian National Theatre and "Riksteatret," and foremost, an actor, at the beautiful Oslo City Hall. In collaboration with Safemuse, this series was made possible with the support of Fritt Ord, Bergesenstiftelsen, the City of Oslo, the City of Harstad, Scene Nord, and CREO.

Cinematography, editing and co-director: Kristoffer Archetti Stølen
Project leader, producer and co-director: Akari Izumi Kvamme
Sound: Marius Ytterdal
Production assistant: Diska Livia

The event is organized by the independent international nonprofit Safe Havens Freedom Talks (SH|FT) through collaborations within the global Arts Rights Justice sector, and with Safemuse graciously supporting as its mentoring organization in the start-up period. SH|FT is supported by the Swedish Arts Council under the Programme for Artistic Freedom, funded by Sida, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. The Freedom Talks are sponsored by the Swedish Institute. The exhibition and platform project is funded by the Swedish Postcode Foundation.
