Writing the Personal Epic with Benjamin Scheuer + Sean Daniels

with playwright Lauren Gunderson

Monday 4 May 2020

Playwright Lauren Gunderson presented Writing the Personal Epic with Benjamin Scheuer + Sean Daniels livestreamed on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Monday 4 May 2020 at 11 a.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC-7) / 1 p.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC-5) / 2 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC-4) / 19:00 BST (London, UTC+1) / 20:00 CEST (Berlin, UTC+2).

From Lauren Gunderson:

Time to get personal. We'll talk about writing from your own life and putting that onstage with music, as a solo show, or as a main stage theatre. Tips, blindspots, process, collaboration, and coming to known yourself as a character...

I delved in to this with Sean as I wrote (and he directed) the premiere of my story THE HEATH (pictures above) about myself and my grandfather. Sean also directed and premiered Benjamin Scheuer's remarkable personal play-with-music THE LION. And then Sean tackled his own story writing THE WHITE CHIP.

All this is to say that we'll have a lot to talk about. I'm so grateful these two brilliant men can spend some time with me.

GUESTS
Benjamin Scheuer is well known throughout the theatre world on both sides of the Atlantic for his one-man show THE LION (2014), (which delivered a clutch of awards including a Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Solo Performance”, an off-West End Award for “Best New Musical”, and an ASCAP Cole Porter Award for Songwriting). Scheuer is also a published children’s author, with his wife Jemima Williams, of "Hibernate With Me" and "Hundred Feet Tall" for Simon & Schuster; and the author of Between Two Spaces, which documented his diagnosis with – and successful treatment for – stage IV Hodgkins Lymphoma. Scheuer is a teller of stories, his own and others. Those stories are about more than a simple narrative, finding magic in both in the everyday and the extraordinary. As with all notable writers, he is both a great listener and a talented orator, bringing his subjects to life and finding the common threads among their personal experiences.
Debut single “I Am Samantha” was inspired and guided by the story of his friend’s journey to transition as told to him in his favourite coffee shop in the West Village, NYC, his former home; Scheuer is now a resident of London.

Sean Daniels is the Artistic Director of Arizona Theatre Company and writer of THE WHITE CHIP, about his journey through alcoholism to recovery. Daniels spent five years as Artistic Director at Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, MA. Previously, he served as Associate Artistic Director at Actors Theatre of Louisville, home of the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Daniels directed the musical play, "The Lion," which premiered Off-Broadway in New York City, winning a Drama Desk Award for Best Solo Performance by Benjamin Scheuer. The show also played in London, at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles and the Old Globe in San Diego. In December, the show will be streamed as part of the BROADWAYHD series. He has developed new work with two-time Tony Award winners Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann (creators of Urinetown), Trey Parker and Matt Stone (Book of Mormon), Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale, Glee) and Jordan Harrison (Orange is the New Black), among others.
Daniels’ play, The White Chip, was produced Off-Broadway by five-time Tony nominee Tom Kirdahy.
