The Cutting Ball Theater in San Francisco presented a staged reading of playwright-in-residence Andrew Saito's Stegosaurus livestreamed on the global, commons-based peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Friday 28 February at 8 p.m. PST / 10 p.m. CST/ 11 p.m. EST.
Andrew Saito is the playwright-in-residence at The Cutting Ball Theater in San Francisco. His position there, created and funded by the Andrew F. Mellon Foundation, is part of a bold nationwide experiment seeking to discover new possibilities for mutual support and achievement in the (often tense) relationship between theatres and theatre writers. Saito, one of 14 Mellon Residency playwrights in the U.S., has already had one world premiere at Cutting Ball since his residency began last March: a surreal fantasia titled Krispy Kritters in the Scarlett Night. And more plays are in the works, including a stage adaptation of Moby-Dick and a time-hopping drama, Mt. Misery. Stegosaurus—the play presented as a staged reading here—is a dark, vigorous, randy comedy about love, the environment, taxidermy, and dressing up as a dinosaur for children's birthday parties.
