A convening of the Latinx Theater Commons Steering Committee will take place at HowlRound: A Center for the Theater Commons at Emerson College, Boston on Friday, March 22, 2013 and will livestream on #NEWPLAY TV, found on the new HowlRound homepage and on newplaytv.info.

Watch the livestream from 9:30am PDT - 12:00pm PDT (San Francisco) / 11:30am CDT - 2pm CDT (Chicago) / 12:30pm EDT - 3pm EDT (Boston) / 16:30 GMT - 19:00 GMT (London) and participate and contribute to the proceedings on Twitter using the hashtag #newplay.

Purpose:

  • We are a group of Latina/o theater artists seeking establish a Latinx Theater Commons in order to “update the American narrative of Latina/os” in our field.
  • The Latina/o presence in the United States is growing rapidly, but its theatrical voice is shrinking. As we enter the second decade of the 21st Century, the multinational narrative of Latina/os in the U.S. is becoming more complex and in need of more thorough examination.
  • We seek the recognition of a canon of Latina/o plays equal to the stature of African-American drama; an ongoing venue for conversation in person and online among Latina/o artists, producers and presenters; and more powerful, diverse Latina/o voices in the polis of the American theater.
