Performing Arts and Higher Education: Where Do We Stand Today?

In the midst of COVID-19 and online teaching, we invite five international practitioners and teachers to an online discussion around the current state of performing arts in higher education.

Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Germany and Netherlands—what are the differences and similarities between the approaches of educational institutions and their methods? What paths are there to follow and are they enough to prepare the next generation of practitioners? How is the pandemic changing our view on performing arts and can our education system keep up with this shift?

Invited artists:

Matija Ferlin is a Croatian theatre director, ensemble dance piece choreographer and performer of his own one-man shows. Graduated from the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam and subsequently lived and worked in Berlin and Toronto. After returning to his hometown Pula, where he was born in 1982, he focused on researching and rearticulating different concepts of stage performance, collaborating both with actors and dancers.

Lisa Verbelen (born 1988) studied Theatrical Performance at De Toneelacademie in Maastricht, and a Master in Music Theatre at the Conservatory of Den Haag. Roos (born 1988) studied theatre studies and dramaturgy at the University of Amsterdam. Together with four others, they founded the theatre collective BOG. in 2013. BOG. is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands and creates performances based from texts written by the creators themselves. More info: www.bogcollectie.com

Oliver Zahn (born 1989) is a German theatre maker, working in various capacities both on stage and behind the scenes. Oliver Zahn’s performance essays circle around the ideas of memory, history and immaterial knowledge. Based on extensive research made up of work in the field, in the archive and on stage, the resulting work is situated on the intersection of performance art and contemporary dance.

 

Moderators:

Raluca Sas-Marinescu is a playwright, dramaturg, Doctor of Theater and Performing Arts (2012) and a professor at the Faculty of Theater and Film of Babeş Bolyai University since 2008. She teaches courses in Performing Text Processing, Scanning Dramaturgy and Literary Secretariat (BA ), Creative Writing in the Performing Arts and Narrative Structures in Contemporary Dramaturgy (MA). She is a member of the research team of the "Vlad Mugur" Center for Research and Creation in Theater, Film and Media, and of the International Association of Theater Critics.

Andrea Tompa is a professor at the Hungarian Theater Institute of the Faculty of Theater and Film of Babeş Bolyai University. She obtained her doctoral degree in Budapest, at the Eötvös Loránd University in 20th century Russian literature. Her main field of expertise is contemporary Hungarian theater. She has been a member of the Hungarian Theater SZÍNHÁZ magazine since 2005. She is the author of four novels.

Because we not really know for what kind of theatre we try to prepare our students, and what kind of skills do they need during their career, what about helping them to become people who are capable to be later the artist they want to be?
