The Latina/o Theatre Commons sounds like a fantastic and exciting opportunity. I'm really looking forward to it. I took a look at the Final Program and was astounded and perplexed that for the Participant Demographics "family's national origin" section that Dominican Republic was not listed as one of the countries. Italy was but not Dominican Republic?

This lack of representation made me scratch my head. There are no Dominicans participating in this conference? If so, why not? Was it that no Dominican theater professionals were available? Or is that no Dominican theater professionals were approached?

Dear Paola,

Thank you for your comment. There were many factors in reaching out to many different theater professionals from across the country. From demographics, to regions, to early-mid-late career artists, we solicited and reached out to as broad spectrum as possible.

The survey from participants included a self-identification. So if an artist did not self-identify as specifically 'Dominican', then that's what we had to take into the equation. The other missing component is that there were more than a dozen artists who could not attend because of timing and/or conflicts. I know for certain that we reached out to more than a few Dominican theater artists. To give another example, we had also invited several artists from the San Francisco Bay Area, but only a few were able to attend.

One of the wonderful things about 'Latinidad' is that despite the fact we are an identity that is made up a lot of different cultures and people from many different "racial makeups", Latina/os do not come from all the same place. Our needs, concerns, expectations, and how we identify ourselves are not always the same. This is a challenge, and something we will continue to strive for when it comes to inclusion of our ever complex shared stories and experiences.

Co-Chair, The Latina/o Theatre Commons

Clyde and Tlaloc,

Thanks so very much for taking the time out of your very busy schedules to reply to my completely random question. I knew it was the first and not the latter. But I felt that I needed to pose the question just because of my extreme curiosity.

Bravo on all the hard work you have both put in and the team you built to bring this amazing conference to life. It is long past over due. It absolutely delights me to know that there will be a weekend dedicated to tackling the greatness, wonder, and sometimes chaotic world of Latina(o)s in theater.

What most impresses me is the diversity among those participating. As you both pointed out more than being one voice we are so many and the line up reflects that.

Clyde you're my hero and I know for a fact that you always represent the very best. Thanks so much for constantly fostering community and discussions about the future of theater in our hoods and in the world at large.

Very much looking forward to the conference.

You guys rock!

Best wishes!

Paola,

I appreciate what Tlaloc had to say as our Co-Chair.

As a member of the Steering Committee, I know for a fact we did our best to be inclusive as possible, and like you, I was pretty damned shocked not a see one Domincana/o on the list of self-identified folks.

From the beginning, I took inclusion to heart, as I feel I do my best to always do, but I also accepted from jump we were not going to cover all the bases because its almost an impossible task.

I also know there is going to be a growing opportunity for participation as the conversation continues and I hope you stay in touch with the Commons as things move forward. Trust me, there are going to be multiple access points moving forward.

Lastly, know I got your back mi hermana, I always do.

Warmest Regards,

Clyde
