Friday Phone Call # 50

Annie-B & Paul Lazar of Big Dance Theater

My guests are Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar, the team behind Big Dance Theater, New York. I was interested in hearing them talk about the ideas underpinning their decades of collaboration and how they have maintained a space for themselves in these times and in the blurry, hybrid world their work inhabits. It turns into a conversation about home, about ambivalence and paradox, about sustaining an aesthetic inquiry and a company, and so many other things. We go long, but they keep unfolding thoughts and ideas and if we weren't all so in motion (with planes to catch—you will hear the SF airport in the background, I'm afraid) we could have just kept at it. It ends with a promise to do it again, with a focus on the importance of seeing international work.
