Sunday 10 May 2015

Working Theater in New York City presented a conversation about community engagement and theatremaking in community as part of the Five Boroughs/One City Project livestreamed on the global, commons-based peer produced HowlRound TV network on howlround.tv on Sunday 10 May at 12 p.m. PDT (Vancouver) / 2 p.m. CDT (Chicago) / 3 p.m. EDT (New York) / 19:00 GMT.

As the Working Theater embarked on its 30th Anniversary season, the company expanded its mission of creating theatre for and about working people by taking the process of making theatre directly to communities where working people live.

The Five Boroughs/One City Project launched in the fall of 2014 with commissions of 5 teams of writers, directors, and installation artists, supported by designers, dramaturgs, and community liaisons. Each team’s goal is to create a piece of theatre rooted in a neighborhood in each of the 5 boroughs of New York by engaging a specific community as both source and resource in the creative process. The work being created is for, inspired by, and in response to each community.

Over the next three seasons, Working Theater, in partnership with a community venue in each borough, will develop and present all 5 projects in rolling premieres within the community of their origin and then in a tour to each partner venue in each borough.

Five Borough/One City artists include:

The Bronx: Dan Hoyle and Maureen Towey at community venue partner: New Settlement Apartments

Manhattan: Caridad Svich, Michael Premo, and Rachel Falcone at community venue partner: Cathedral of St. John the Divine

Brooklyn: Ed Cardona Jr., Ana Margineanu at community venue partner Salvation Army Community Center in Bushwick

Queens: Adam Kraar, Gaye Taylor Upchurch at community venue partner Electchester Housing, a project of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers

Staten Island: Chisa Hutchinson, Kristin Horton at community venue partner Snug Harbor Cultural Center

On Sunday, May 10th, the commissioned artists who have for the past six months been immersed in the communities of Bushwick, Brooklyn Highbridge, Bronx Electchester, Queens North Shore of Staten Island, and the congregational community of The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Manhattan, will engage in a conversation with TCG’s Executive Director, Teresa Eyring about community engagement and theatremaking in community.

Questions to be explored include:

  • What are the various ways the teams of artists engaged community members in their process?
  • In what ways does the process of creating theatre through community engagement differ from the more traditional process?
  • What were—to this point—the surprises and challenges of each specific process?
  • How did the artists address concerns of ownership and authenticity of process?
