Puppets in the Green Mountains 2022

Access Through The Arts Panel Discussions Exploring the Theme of Roots and Wings

Saturday 10 September - Sunday 18 September 2022

Sandglass Theater presented events from the Puppets in the Green Mountains Festival 2022 (PGM) livestreaming on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Saturday 10 September, Saturday 17 September, and Sunday 18 September 2022.

Sandglass Theater explores Roots and Wings in next Puppets in the Green Mountains festival.

Local and international artists and community leaders bring to life this year’s theme: Roots and Wings. The festival celebrates the thriving art of puppet theatre as a means of enhancing perspective, generating compassion, and celebrating the human spirit. With family shows, shows for adults, workshops, and forum discussions, PGM: Roots and Wings has something for everyone.

Over the last twenty-five years, the PGM festival has grown substantially. What began as an event to present unique and inspiring puppet theatre from around the world now welcomes thousands of participants. This year will include artists from Germany, Kenya, Jordan, Mexico, the United States, and a world premiere of a new Sandglass production. This eleventh edition of PGM embraces its role as a meeting ground, an educational platform, a space for discussion, and a celebration of puppet theatre.

Sandglass Theater is also celebrating its fortieth anniversary as a force for creating innovative theatre and community building. Puppet theatre is unique in its ability to give audiences a focused lens to reflect and relate. This edition of PGM will use this lens to explore the notion of Roots and Wings:

“There are two things that parents should give their children: roots and wings. Roots to give them bearing and a sense of belonging, but also wings to help free them from constraints and prejudices and give them other ways to travel (or rather, to fly).” – Goethe

“As Sandglass looks forward to the next generation of artists, community leaders, and citizens, Goethe’s words take on a contemporary urgency. With one foot in the knowledge of who we are and where we have come from and the other in the creative possibilities of the imagination, Roots and Wings inspires us to make informed, positive choices and be active citizens in our world today.” – Sandglass Theater’s co-artistic director, Shoshana Bass

Join our international guest artists and local community leaders for three exciting panels that discuss the festival’s themes from the perspective of literature, local traditions and history, and social change. The Access Through the Arts forums are a meeting place between our guest artists, local leaders, and you, the audience.

The three panels will take place on three different days and are free to attend.

Saturday 10 September

Shaping Wings for Change
1 p.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 3 p.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 4 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4)
Theater Waidspeicher (Germany)
Paradox Teatro (Mexico/USA)
Parenting for Social Change (local authors)

This panel discusses how we talk with children about social justice and how we plant the seeds to shape change rather than perpetrate a harmful norm. We celebrate perspective-altering literature for children and adults and how it correlates with art-making practice.

Saturday 17 September

Transforming Communities
9 a.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 11 a.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 12 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4)
Krystal Puppeteers (Kenya/Ghana)
Susu CommUnity Farm (local farm)

This panel discusses how we shift resources, education, and power within communities and how art and food are doorways into important change and healing. As the world is impacted by pandemics, climate change, and economic inequities, how do arts and social initiatives work together to reach diverse populations and empower local voices?

Sunday 18 September

Growing New Roots
9 a.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 11 a.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 12 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4)
Dafa Puppet Theatre (Jordan/Czech Republic)
Patty Whalen (local judge)

This panel discusses how war threatens our roots and what we take with us or sacrifice in exile. How do we address the effects of war through the lens of art and of international law? If history is a record of significant events, how are we, as members of our communities, impacted and transformed by those events?
